Variegated Society Garlic
These long-blooming perennials from South Africa are easy to grow. The star-shaped flowers grow in large, round clusters that appear intermittently throughout the spring and summer.

Society Garlic
Description
Tulbaghia violacea is a fast growing plant that forms clumps reaching 30 inches in height. This plant grows well in dry circumstances and makes a good rock garden or container plant.

Tulbaghia violacea 'Silver Lace', or Variegated Society Garlic, is a perennial plant with narrow, up to 12 inch (30 cm) long leaves. The leaves arise from a rhizome that creeps underground to form clumps up to 24 inches (60 cm) wide.

Society garlic enjoys summer in this Zone 5 garden in Kentucky. In autumn it is potted up brought indoors for the winter where its leaves can contribute to the enjoyment of baked potatoes.

Society Garlic
Although Tulbaghia violacea "Variegata" or "Silver Lace," a native of South Africa, is similar to garlics, it is only a distant cousin. It is more closely related to narcissis.

Common name: `Society Garlic`.
History: Linnaeus first documented Tulbaghia in 1771. It was never widely grown in gardens due to the scent of garlic that it emits.
