Resistant to oak root fungus. Unpleasant, Flower and Pollen Fragrance. SelecTree lists no cultivars of sativa.
A Castanea sativa in Fremont is registered as a California Big Tree.

 


Spanish Chestnut, once established, is tolerant of drought. It does best in sandy, well drained soils and is highly tolerant of acidic soils. If kept too dry when young, Spanish chestnut may remain as a shrub and never grow to tree size.

Usage
The Spanish chestnut is a magnificent huge shade tree for parks, estates and avenues. It is quite showy in bloom. They are common in England and most of the Continent.

The most used timber for Hop poles is Spanish Chestnut, which is largely grown for this special purpose in coppices in hopgrowing districts. Ash is also used.

The pretty white and purple flowers float about among the leaves, and are followed by peculiar fruits, with a hard shell and sweet white kernels, which have the flavor of a Spanish chestnut, and are good to eat either raw or cooked.
