Spruce may be attacked by needle casts. One causes needles to turn yellow or brown and drop off. Another affects the lowest needles first then moves up the tree. Infected needles are a mottled yellow.

Most spruce needles are four-sided, stiff, and less than one inch long, 2.5 centimeters to be exact. Woody, peglike projections help join the needles to the twigs. Spruce trees grow tall and most are shaped like pyramids.

This spruce is a good choice for adding "bones" to the garden. This handsome conifer has a charming shape and adds substance to my own mixed garden border.

( Red Spruce )
This evergreen conifer has a narrow, pyramidal growth habit with curved branches turned upwards at the tips. Bark is scaly, purple-brown, turning to red-brown; shoots are buff colored.

More common in cold climates but Colorado spruce can be found in the Bay Area, often installed by transplanted gardeners who grew up with them or those who are setting out live Christmas trees.

The wood of Engelmann Spruce is not widely used because of its habitat of high mountainous areas. But if used, is grouped with other spruces. The soft, yellowish-brown, resilient wood is used in general construction. It is important for firewood.
