Flat, velvety, light-green, antler-like leaves arch from the green shell-like base. Does best in sphagnum moss on wood or in baskets.

Staghorn ferns are native to eastern Australia. They range from the tropical forests of New Guinea to 3000-foot high Mount Boss in New South Wales, Australia. The staghom ferns from Mount Boss tolerate freezing temperatures as low as 10 degrees.

Platycerium bifurcatum or "staghorn fern" is native to Australia, New Caledonia, New Guinea and Indonesia. They are epiphytic ferns and are usually grown on weathered hardwood or slabs of bark or in hanging baskets.

Staghorn ferns are epiphytes, using trees for support only; they do not obtain nourishment or water from the host tree as would a parasite - see dodder (Cuscuta spp) for an example of true parasitic plant.

Staghorn Fern, with its antler-like, drooping fronds, is shown off to good advantage in a hanging container.
