Pink buds open to white star-shaped flowers in early spring. The scent is subtly sweet with a hint of citrus.

Three different clones are listed under this name. All have pink fragrant flowers, slightly larger than typical. Deciduous shrubs, reaching 5-15 feet tall with rough brown or silvery gray bark. Twigs are greeny-yellow.

Culture
Star magnolia likes deep, organic, acid soil. Provide plenty of leaf mold and a good layer of mulch around the roots.

The star magnolia (M. stellata, Zone 5) is likely the most widely grown. This slow-growing shrub may eventually reach five metres tall and about three metres wide, with dense branches and 10-centimetre-wide, white flowers.

The star magnolia is a deciduous large shrub or small tree, growing up to 20 feet tall. The flowers are usually white, although some varieties have pink blossoms. Stellata blooms early in the spring, before the leaves appear.

Royal Star Magnolia:
a year round delight
Magnolia stellata "Royal Star" is a popular magnolia cultivar producing scads of large mildly fragrant snowy-white double-flowers from mid-March through April before its leaves emerge.

Very slow growing, star magnolia is usually seen in home landscapes as a medium sized shrub. In autumn the leaves turn yellow to bronze before falling.
