Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo)
Puffy fruits the size of olives turn from yellow when young to red when mature. The fruits are borne at the same time as urn-shaped flowers among dark evergreen leaves.

Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is mainly regarded as an environmental weed in Victoria and South Australia.

The strawberry tree is a beautiful small evergreen tree or shrub that can occasionally reach 27ft tall and 24ft wide, though it is usually rather smaller.

Arbutus, a Latin word, means strawberry tree, for its red fruits. Menziesii is named after the man who discovered it, Archibald Menzies, a naturalist for the Vancouver expedition. In 1792 Vancouver discovered and explored the Puget Sound region.

180 (300)cm, unusually tall, woody, upright growing, branching shrub with glossy, lanceolate leaves with slightly serrated margins similar to those of the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo, hence its name).

Another common name is madrone, a Spanish word for the strawberry tree, of which arbutus is a close relative. The Scottish botanist Archibald Menzies first collected specimens in 1792 and described it as the oriental strawberry tree.
