Strawflower are easy to grow. They prefer full sun to partial shade. They will do well in poor to average soils, and tolerate heat and drought conditions. Water them during dry periods, once or twice per week.
Strawflowers are perfect for hot sunny beds where they'll produce flowers thoughout the summer and fall.
Usage
Use strawflower in annual beds and borders. Low growing cultivars are used as edging and in patio containers and window boxes.

The annuals, such as the commonly planted Strawflower, are mainstays for dried arrangements. Both are excellent for hot, sunny locations, as they need little water once established and require good drainage.
Strawflowers were used by the Egyptians to decorate the statues of their gods. Greeks used strawflowers mixed with honey to soothe burns. In the Victorian era strawflowers were used to make fireplace screens.
Flowers with fragile stems, like strawflower, should have their stems reinforced with a piece of floral wire before being hung upside down. Flowers hung this way usually take two or three weeks to dry completely.
Closer to the lake lies the production herb garden, where annuals such as basil, calendula, gomphrena, larkspur, strawflower, and other plants used in workshops are grown.
Helichrysum bracteatum (Paper Daisy, Everlasting Daisy)- excellent in dried arrangements, strawflower is also pretty in the garden.
