Sunflowers are native to the Americas. They were grown domestically as early as 3000 B.C.E. in Arizona and New Mexico. Some archaeologists think the sunflower may have been domesticated even before corn.

Oxe-Eye Sunflower are perennials from open spots in prairies and sunny mountain meadows in North America. They develop numerous and very colorful, bright yellow flowers on medium to tall stalks throughout summer.

Comments: Sunflower is a large plant that produces large,
yellow flowers followed by edible seeds. Grow the plants
in full sun and a well-drained soil. Birds can offer
stiff competition for the seeds as the seed heads mature.

The common sunflower is easily grown from seed and is available in a variety of colors. A true sun worshipper, its head follows the sun as it crosses the sky.

Sclerotinia fungal disease infects nearly 360 different plants, including such favorites as beans, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, sunflowers, petunias, zinnias, and poppies.

Modern sunflowers are much more than one huge yellow flower on a tall stalk. Many new varieties have been developed. Flowers range from two-colored or banded, to chestnut red or pale yellow.

Sunflowers are supposedly allelopathic: their roots give off a chemical that inhibits the growth of other, nearby plants. Most gardeners don't seem to notice this, though.

The Sunflower family of plants is regarded as mostly herbaceous to us northern hemisphere gardeners. Well, guess what? It is a gigantic and widespread family; many members are woody, and some are even trees.

Like all sunflowers, this one loves the sun. It can grow from 3-10 feet tall and is characterized by a long stalk of multiple, yellow flowers. It is one of the last plants to bloom in early September, and can tolerate a few frosts.

Perennial sunflowers are a hard lot to label, but let's try. A native North American native plant, Helianthus decapetalus (Zone 4) is the titular head of a list of varieties; our Golden Glow may be H. d. 'Flore Pleno' (or perhaps a form of Rudbeckia).

We don't actually plant sunflowers, but every year a few appear in the garden mostly immediately under hanging birdfeeders in full sun, though birds also drop the seeds elsewhere in the gardens.

Many cultivars have been selected for improved fruit traits. Most are not readily available, but two varieties offered occasionally by specialty New England nurseries are 'Sunflower' and 'Overleese'.

The leaves are sometimes used as an adulterant for tea[2, 177, 183]. A manna is obtained from the tree[183]. No further details are given. An edible oil similar to sunflower (Helianthus annuus) oil is obtained from the seed[7].
