Sweet corn is a long season crop. To extend the harvest, plant varieties that mature at different rates. You can expect one to two ears of corn per plant.

Sweet corn is the most popular for home gardeners. Varieties can be yellow, white or bi-color. Needs 8 hours of sun per day. Harvest when the tassles are dry and the kernels produce a milky fluid when pierced.

I was surprised to find sweet corn cut from the cob and served raw in a salad, and I suppose it did me more good than if it had been boiled to destroy the vitamins and leach all the minerals into the liquid.

(I remember confusing the two on tests in my perennial class in college.) The basal fans elongate in flowering to become leafy stems with alternate foliage arranged like sweet corn and blossoms appearing out of the topmost bract leaves.
