American Sweet Gum, Sweet Gum, Sweetgum
Good as shade trees or planted in informal groves, their star-shaped leaves turn red, yellow, orange or purple in fall. Their round spiny fruits are shaped like the maces that medieval knights once carried.

Sweet gum resin can be used as a stabilizer in cakes and other foods and can be chewed to sweeten the breath. It also has medicinal, incense, perfume, soap, and adhesive uses.

styraciflua, or Sweet Gum, the American variety, is sometimes confused because its product, obtained by spontaneous exudation, is often called Liquidambar, as well as Liquid Storax or copalm balsam.

Trees that are difficult to move (beech, hickory, sweet gum, hornbeam, sassafras, tupelo, walnut and white oak) need larger root balls than trees that are easy to transplant.

Another wonderful plant that greeted me when I opened the car door was a white edged sweet gum. It seems as though the English have selected all kinds of wonderful native american plants, that are almost ignored here.

Instead of having the cookie-cutter look of trees like Bradford pear, the fruitless sweet gum has a more free form habit. In formal mall plantings where exact duplicates are wanted, this has caused some disappointment.
