Tansy (Tanacetum) - An elegant variety of the common Tansy. T. vulgare, and much dwarfer in stature than it, is the var. crispum. Its emerald green leaves are smaller, and have a crisped appearance.

Tanacetum vulgare (Compositeae) - Also called "bitter buttons", tansy was imported from Europe, where it was formerly used in cooking and folk medicine. Modern herbals discourage its use because it contains thujone, which can be fatal.

Tansy, Alecost, Feverfew -- the traditional names for these herbs conjure up a medieval cottage garden.

Tansy is a flowering herb with finely divided compound leaves and yellow, buttonlike flowers. It has a stout, somewhat reddish, erect stem, usually smooth, 50-150 cm tall, and branching near the top.

Tansy are grown from seeds in the spring. Directly seed them into your flower garden after all danger of frost. Sow seeds early in the season and cover lightly with 1/4" of fine garden or potting soil. Water thoroughly once.

Lake Huron tansy is a threatened plant of the coastal dunes, occurring on the northern shores of Lakes Michigan and Huron and the Lake Superior shoreline.

PREVENTION: The risk of toxicosis is low with tansy, however if a pet begins to chew this plant, consider keeping the pet and plant separated (especially if the pet is confined in the plant's vicinity).

Tansy came from Europe to North America probably with early settlers, long enough ago that it now behaves as a native plant here, growing along roadsides and fences throughout New England, west to Minnesota, and south to Missouri.

Tansy's active ingredients of camphor, borneol, & thujone give it its horrible taste & its capacity to ward off insects. New tender leaves are even so sometimes added to salads, with the warning that over use is harmful.

The Chamomile tribe includes the most aromatic members of the Aster family, such as sagebrush, yarrow, tansy, and of course, chamomile. As a kid I encountered many different species of sage (Artemisia). There are 19 species just in Montana.

Closely allied to the Tansy is another old English herb - Costmary (Tanacetum balsamita, Linn.).

For repelling insects on skin: Mix 1 teaspoon each of essential oils of pennyroyal, citronella, eucalyptus, rosemary, and tansy. Shake oils in 1 cup of vegetable or olive oil. Store away from light in a sealed container.

Common Tansy rarely flowers, but spreads rapidly throughout the garden via its underground root system if not frequently checked. The variety crispum has leaves that are more finely dissected and is not quite as aggressive as the species form.

Consider leaf shape and colour when positioning herbs, some not commonly used in food like rue and tansy are worth growing for their decorative leaves.

Marigold, catnip, and tansy seem to deter beetles as well, because of their strong fragrance. Handpicking adults is another option. Insecticides that are labelled to control Colorado Potato Beetle can be used. Follow the label to a tee.
