Genus Taxodium
Trees deciduous or evergreen . Branchlets terete . Lateral roots commonly producing erect , irregularly conic to rounded "knees" in periodically flooded habitats . Leaves alternate, in 2 ranks or not.

Taxodium mucronatum (Montezuma Cypress) - This beautiful Mexican native can grow in dry soils, however it will grow slower, or in well-watered areas like lawns.

Description
The bright green fern-like leaves give the Bald Cypress its unique look. Its leaves turn a coppery bronze in the autumn, then drop in the winter.

Taxodium ascendens, Pond Cypress, is similar, but smaller, has shorter needles, and is less cold-hardy than T. distichum, it is sometimes listed as T. distichum var. ascendens.
Taxodium: resembles Taxus; distichum: in two ranks (the leaves).

The bald cypresses (genus Taxodium) were widely distributed in the geologic past but are now restricted to the SE United States and Mexico. They are called “bald" because of their deciduous character, unusual in conifers.
