Evergreen conifer, tree/srub, to 65 ft (20 m) in its habitat, but more shurby in cultivation, branches ascending or horizontal. Bark reddish-brown. New growth reddish.

This dwarf evergreen is usually grown as a round shrub, but can be grown as a small tree. It's heavy dark green leaves are linear with spiny tips. Leaves turn to a reddish-green tint in winter.
