Plantation Teak is a tropical hardwood tree from the genus Tectona, endemic to Southeast Asia.

Teak is widely cultivated in the tropics; the main producers are Burma, India, Thailand and Indonesia. Like all forests, plantations of teak can act as carbon stores; in Panama, for example, teak plantations sequester carbon dioxide at a rate of 191.

Teak is considered a very valuable wood because of its ability to withstand weather. It even prevents any metal used in it from rusting. Teak is very stable, which means that it does not warp when subjected to variations in humidity and temperature.

Teak will turn from a golden-brown colour when new to a silvery-grey when weathered. If the original colour is preferred, teak protector can be applied, but this removes the natural patina.

White teak (Gmelina arborea) is regarded as an environmental weed in the Northern Territory and as a potential environmental weed in Queensland. It has been grown as an ornamental and shade tree, and occasionally also in forestry plantations.

After teak, it is the most important cultivated timber tree in India, planted on roadsides, and as a shade tree for tea plantations. Sissoo makes first class cabinetry and furniture.

The wood, which is of teak quality and very dark but variegated, is produced commercially.

Often sold under the name "teak oil", tung oil dries quickly to form a tough, glossy, waterproof surface.

Worldwide, there are about 75 genera and 3,000 species, including teak wood (Tectona) and the fast-growing "white teak" (Gmelina). Fifteen genera are found in North America, mostly across the southern states. Only Verbena is widespread.

Kino is the inspissated juice of the Bastard Teak (Pterocarpus marsupium) obtained from incisions made in the trunk. The term Kino is also applied to the juice of other plants inspissated without artificial heat.

Some manufacturers even market beds made of teak with weatherproof mattresses for creating an exotic, outdoor bedroom.Materials are weatherproof, quick drying and made with UV protection to prevent fading.

The great hardness of teak is due to the silica deposited in the heart-wood, and the special coloring matters of various woods, such as satinwood, ebony, &c., are confined to the heart-wood.
