Begonias are tender perennials, grown for their colorful flowers and foliage. Most begonias can be grown outdoors in pots, in the ground, or in hanging baskets in filtered light and moist, but well drained soil.

Thorns and prickles don't always deter pests, as in the case of roses, which are loved by insects and deer alike. Combined with other attributes, though, thorns may reduce damage.

Indian hawthorns are grown for their attractively neat, mounded form and clusters of flowers. The fragrant, pink or white crabapple-like flowers open in clusters above the foliage in mid-April to May.

Question: How should I go about caring for a crown of thorns? Answer: The crown of thorns, Euphorbia splendens, thrives on neglect.

This hawthorne grows to 25 feet, with 4 inch (!!!) long thorns, and is hardy in zones 4-6.

It will grow eventually 7 to 10 ft tall, with erect and spreading main branches, branchlets sometimes with thick thorns, a trunk that is whitish grey, the bark is smooth, often flaking into thin peels.

Caring for a Crown of Thorns
My crown of thorns has developed some problems over the past several months.

Some 100-150 species of deciduous, sometime evergreen, shrubs; upright, arching, or climbing, stems usually with prickles ("thorns") or bristles.

Field Marks: Of the southern hawthorns, this one may be distinguished by its leaves broadest above the middle and rusty brown hairs on the lower surface of the leaves, particularly along the veins.

They usually have thorns, clusters of white (rarely rose-colored) flowers in the spring, and colorful orange, red, or yellow (rarely blue or black) fruits in the fall. The fruits, called haws, resemble tiny apples; some are used in jellies.

Before placing the roses in a vase, remove any leaves and thorns that will be below the water after arranging, since these will quickly disintegrate, foul the water, and shorten the life of the cut flowers.

The habit of training firethorns to walls is an 18th Century innovation that first appeared in England and spread to this country soon thereafter.

This is a particularly beautiful cultivar of the often overlooked hawthorns. It is quite a small tree, with a maximum height of around 6m (20ft) often less, so suited to fairly restricted sites.

Habitat
Black hawthorns like lots of sunlight to grow to tree size. The apple-like fruit provides food for birds in the winter. Impenetrable hawthorn thickets are good nesting and denning or resting and sleeping sites for small birds and mammals.
