Thunbergia alata 'African Sunset' (black-eyed Susan) P: Twining climber displaying masses of brick-red to soft-cream flowers with a black centre and triangular mid-green leaves.

Thunbergia has extrafloral nectaries on the calyx, while in Avicennia nectar is secreted from glands on the corolla tube (for details, see Tomlinson 1986).

* Thunbergia. Of the more than a hundred species of Thunbergia, only a few are cultivated. Probably the showiest is the sky flower (T. grandiflora), a vigorous plant from India. It reaches 20 feet (often more) and has large heart-shaped leaves.
