Lobelia inflata
This is the most common lobelia in Connecticut. As the seed pod develops, it swells into a ball, hence the species name "inflata." These inflated seedpods are the best identifying mark for Indian-tobacco.
Tobacco belongs to the potato family and, as such, is related to the tomato, pepper and deadly nightshade. The early explorers and conquistadors encountered natives smoking the leaf. Cortez shipped leaf back to Spain in 1519.
Tree tobacco bears fleshy, almost succulent, saucer-sized leaves colored a lovely silvery blue.

Aztec Tobacco is a somewhat bushy annual or short-lived perennial herb, up to 1 m tall. Leaves are broadly ovate to elliptic, sometimes elliptic- lanceshaped or round, 2.5-12.5 cm or more in length, fleshy, hairy and sticky. Leaf stalk is not winged.

Sitting at my desk during the last hurrah of winter, I am imagining the wonderful fragrance of the flowering tobaccos in my garden once again.
Native Americans smoked it instead of tobacco and also to treat asthma and related respiratory problems; today it is sometimes used to help reduce nicotine addiction and tobacco withdrawal symptoms.
Did you Know? It should come to no surprise that Nicotiana is also called Tobacco Flower, or Flowering Tobacco. And.....yes, Nicotiana has high concentrations of nicotine.

When selecting varieties, it is important that you look for a variety that has TM in the name or that is specified as being tobacco mosaic resistant. C. annuum is the most cultivated pepper in the world, both commercially and in home gardens.
Do not use tobacco products near peppers, since tobacco mosaic virus can be readily spread from tobacco. The two most troublesome diseases of peppers in the home garden are bacterial wilt and bacterial leaf spot.
