Impatiens: Impatiens - also known as Sultana, Touch-me-not, and Busy Lizzie (Impatiens wallerana) - is the best known species, with its mounding habit, long bloom and incredible range of colors.

Luxuriant stands of spotted jewelweed or touch-me-nots (Impatiens capensis) begin flowering in mid-July and continue to blossom until the translucent stems are destroyed by frost.

The names Impatiens and Touch-Me-Not refer to the seed pods' explosive and abrupt opening of the fruit when touched. I. capensis, commonly known as Jewelweed, is a folk remedy for poison ivy, but there is no scientific proof of its effectiveness.

Similar Species: Pale Touch-me-not, Impatiens pallida is very similar. It has yellowish flowers and is slightly larger in every respect. It has a more northerly range being found only as far south as the mountains of Georgia.

Did you know? Impatiens are also called "Touch-Me-Not's and Snapweed". Why? Because water builds up in the seed walls, and can burst when touched, spraying seeds all over.
