One of many kinds of tree fern, Dicksonia antarctica, soft tree fern, also called Hardy or Tasmanian, is native to southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Dicksonia is named for an 18th century British plants man, James Dickson.

Australian tree fern is a large, robust, attractive tree fern popular in cultivation in temperate regions. The common name 'Australian tree fern' may also be used to refer to Cyathea cooperi and Cyathea australis.

Australian tree fern has dark green fronds that can reach 12 feet long. Its stem elongates into a trunk-like structure, giving the plant the appearance of a palm tree. Humidity is essential to growing this plant well.

It should not be mixed with tree fern, cork, or osmunda fiber, but may be blended with fir bark or charcoal. Coarse peat moss contains few nutrients and breaks down slowly, so balanced fertilizers are recommended.
