Tropical hibiscus flowers are one of the enduring symbols of the tropics. These much-beloved, large and showy flowers can be grown inside in temperate zones, but it's not an easy task.

 


All tropical hibiscus are evergreen, and leaf variation extends from the almost circular leaf to the very narrow, with many in between, while leaf margins can vary from smooth, or slightly serrated, to highly indented.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis are native to Tropical Asia. Hibiscus plants are among the showiest of flowering shrubs, often reaching 30 feet in nature.

Tropical hibiscus respond to bright light, high humidity and even temperatures close to 20'C. A light, soilless mix is recommended, as good drainage is essential.

30 (50)cm, annual tropical Hibiscus from C Africa, large pale yellow flowers with a dark center, very attractive. Will readily self-sow under good conditions as seeds are frost resistent.

Other common names include Chinese hibiscus and tropical hibiscus.
About This Plant
Hibiscus are deciduous shrubs with dark green leaves; the plants can grow to 15 feet tall in frost-free areas.

Tropical Hibiscus that are grown in greenhouses need a sunny location and a minimum winter temperature of 45-50F.

Growing to a height of 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide, this shrub is loved primarily for its large, to 2 1/2 inches wide, funnel-shaped blooms that resemble those of the tropical hibiscus, yet not as flashy.
