Giant bulrush (and other species often called "tule" in California) were used by native Americans for food, roofing, insulation, thatch, bedding, clothing, and many other applications. Young shoots of bulrush can be eaten raw or cooked.
The Big Tree of Tule, near Oaxaca, Mexico, is a famous giant. Apparently formed by the fusion of 3 trees, it has a trunk circumference of 112' (34 m) and a height of 141' (43 m).
