Tupelo trees are known for their beautiful fall color and interesting shape.

 


Tupelos are valued as honey plants in the southeastern United States, particularly in the Gulf Coast region. They produce a very light, mild-tasting honey.

Water tupelo leaves are 7 inches long, thin, occasionally wavy-margined and oval with a pointed tip. In the fall, they turn orange or red, but not as intensely as their upland cousin, the black gum.

Five species of deciduous trees. Leaves alternate, simple, entire or toothed. Flowers inconspicuous, green, 5 petals, 10 stamens. Fruit is an oblong drupe.

Black tupelo makes an excellent shade tree. The formality of its habit lends it to use as a specimen tree although it can be grown in groves quite nicely as well. The medium size of the canopy make it quite useful for smaller properties.

NYSSACEAE (Tupelo family)
A small deciduous tree of handsome appearance with deep green toothed leaves to 6 inches, furry and paler underneath, with odor like mint.

GENERAL: Also called Black tupelo, this is usually a medium sized tree, to 40' in height on dry slopes and ridge tops, but it can reach 100' and 5' in diameter in moist areas along streams.

Description:
Black Tupelo is a tree that may vary tremendously (from one plant to the next) in its growth habit in youth; most have a generally upright growth habit, but some have a cascading habit (as shown here, reminiscent of Sourwood).

Trees that are difficult to move (beech, hickory, sweet gum, hornbeam, sassafras, tupelo, walnut and white oak) need larger root balls than trees that are easy to transplant.

The wild countryside around consisted of native trees and shrubs-oaks, pines, sweet gum, black gum, tupelo, magnolia, sweet bay, bullbay, hickory, dogwood, holly, yaupon, ironwood, tulip tree, juniper, cedar, cypress, chinquapin, pecan, mulberry, ...
