This is a deciduous, spreading shrub with lance-shaped, glossy dark-green leaves, to 1 1/2 inches long. White bell-shaped flowers are borne in axillary and terminal racemes.

Vaccinium vitis-idaea is native to North America.

The first photograph of Vaccinium vitis-idaea var minus, or Dwarf Lingonberry, was snapped in July (2002). It is showing off it's long-lasting orange-red berries amidst glossy, fully evergreen leaves.

Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are trailing, mat forming, evergreen shrubs that belong to the azalea family and are closely related to blueberries. They grow naturally in peaty bogs in the northeastern states and adjacent areas of Canada.

In a heavenly shade of pink, Vaccinium 'Pink Lemonade' is the first ever pink blueberry to be brought to market. This new blueberry may be pink, but it's as rich in anti-oxidants as its blue cousins.

Field Marks: This Vaccinium differs from all other species in the genus by its leaves which are deciduous, less than 1 1/2 inches long, and smooth or hairy without glands on the lower surface.

In general, rabbiteyes (Vaccinium ashei) are the most adaptable, productive and pest-tolerant of the three types of blueberries. Except for higher mountain elevations, rabbiteye cultivars are adapted to all of South Carolina.

Cranberries are considered by some botanists to belong to the blueberry genus Vaccinium. The cultivated species is the native American or large cranberry (O. or V. macrocarpus). The tart red berries are used for sauces, jellies, pies, and beverages.

The wild North American species of lingonberry, Vaccinium vitis-idaea var. minus (also called the mountain cranberry) is a low-growing plant that blooms only in the spring; the European and Asian native, V. v. var.
