Vanilla is the fully grown fruit of the orchid Vanilla fragrans harvested before it is fully ripe; then it is fermented and cured. The greenish flowers are about 2 inches across (5 cm).

Vanilla is a flavouring derived from orchids in the genus Vanilla native to Mexico. The name came from the Spanish word "vainilla," meaning "little pod.

It is a plant of strong growth, forming many crowns and a profusion of clear yellow vanilla-scented flowers, from July into the autumn.
