Popular short-lived perennial, treated as an annual used as a ground cover or low border in front of taller perennials. Flat-topped flower clusters present from late spring until first frost.
Verbenas are half-hardy perennials that occasionally will overwinter in the garden if planted in a location that is dry during the winter. They're also ideally suited for hanging baskets and container gardens.

Verbena canadensis "Homestead Purple" has tough leaves resembling except it is not tall & upright. It is a twisty trailing clumper about a foot tall & can spread to three feet wide or wider. It is potentially rampant.
Verbena looks great in flower beds, window boxes, rock gardens and containers. They make good ground cover, too. Small, but luscious, most varieties of these bushy plants grow only 8-12 in. tall, but spread out two feet or more.

Some 400 species of woody trees, shrubs, and vines. Leaves opposite or whorled, simple. Flowers in terminal or axillary clusters, relatively large, mostly white, blue, violet, or red.
The Verbenaceae are herbs, shrubs, or trees comprising about 100 genera and 2,600 species that are further characterized by the common occurrence of quadrangular twigs and/or aromatic herbage.
Lemon verbena (Aloysia triphylla) is her favorite herb. She loves to smell its lemon-lime fragrance when the wind blows and uses the leaves in teas and fruit salads. She starts this perennial from cuttings; it does best in a pot on the patio.

Perennials such as verbena, salvia, rudbeckia and coreopsis all work very well in pots. Vining plants like variegated vinca, black-eyed Susan vine, hyacinth bean and morning glory can add a different dimension to containers.

Lantana blooms year round and attracts butterflies for pollination to the garden.
Tender perennials such as verbena, bidens, gazanias and argyranthemums are best propagated each year from cuttings. In this way, you can keep the garden supplied with bushy, vigorous plants full of flowering potential.
