Additional Comments: Vervain was one of the sacred herbs of the Druids and was called hiera botane, or sacred plant, by the Romans. Gerard warns against using it for 'witchcraft and sorceries'.

In Drayton's Nymphidia are the lines: 'Therewith her Vervain and her Dill, That hindereth Witches of their Will.' Culpepper tells us that: 'Mercury has the dominion of this plant, and therefore to be sure it strengthens the brain....

Gunflints boiled in a mixture of rue and vervain were said improve the shooter's aim. Artists, including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, improved their creativity and eyesight by ingesting rue.

However, it will set seed and stop flowering if not deadheaded. It also goes by the common names of Clump Verbena and Rose Verbena, and by substituting Vervain for Verbena in any of the names. Its family is also known as the Vervain Family.
