Viburnum cinnamomifolium, or Cinnamomum-leafed viburnum, is not an allusion to cinnamon. It is the name of the camphor tree, Cinnamomum camphora. The large, drooping, ribbed evergreen leaves on red stems make for a handsome appearance all year round.

Viburnum (Viburnum) is a genus of about 150-175 species of shrubs or (in a few species) small trees that were previously included in the family Caprifoliaceae.

Viburnum carlesii
Clusters of dark pink to red buds open to highly fragrant white flowers in mid and late spring. The flowers are often followed by 1/4" red fruit that ripens to black. Fall foliage often becomes a brilliant red.

Viburnums vary widely in height, ranging from 60 centimetres to six metres, making it easy to select the right one for any situation. North American native species such as V. lantanoides, V. dentatum, V. lentago, V. prunifolium and V.

Viburnum is a huge genus with hundreds of species many of which are used in landscaping. In Florida where I live, in addition to the sandanqua, sweet viburnum (V. odoratissimum) and laurestinus (V. tinus) are other favorites.

Shasta viburnum (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum) is a large deciduous shrub with a rectangular profile, usually wider than tall. While size estimates vary, I've seen a number that are 12 feet high and 15 feet wide after 15 years.

Maple-leaf viburnum has dark blue fruits. They ripen in fall, and they often persist on plants through most of the winter.
Fall color of maple-leaf viburnum is variable -- it can be shades of red, as here, or even pink or purple.

The doublefile viburnum plant makes a great strange-but-true story or a good trick question in a plant materials class.

Similar Species: In our area the lobed leaves can generally distinguish this species from Viburnums which may otherwise be similar.

Viburnum Carlesii
Viburnum Carlesii - A charming Japanese shrub of rather loose habit, with roundish leaves, silvery on the underside and greyish-green above from their coating of fine hairs.

Viburnum prunifolium (Black haw), a relative in the Caprifoliaceae family, is used similarly although V. opulus is thought to be a stronger antispasmodic.

Down here in the south, we can grow many of the more tender shrubs such as variegated aucubas, variegated hydrangeas, variegated viburnum tinus, and variegated gardenias.
