Creeping evergreen ground cover, forming a dense tangled mat of long stems and elliptical leaves, rooting at intervals. Pale blue to purple flowers in spring. An aggressive grower, can be invasive.

Vinca or Periwinkle is a prolific heat and drought tolerant annual, perfect for hot, dry areas. It's easy to grow, and requires little or no attention. A grower once reported that he has grown Vinca in the same location for 30 years.

Leaves opposite, oblong, glossy dark green. Flowers are rose-pink to mauve, to white. Slender corolla tube about 1" long. Most grow upright to 18" tall but there are trailing varieties.

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' (black grass) and ivy work well as underplanting for potted shrubs such as Vinca, Euonymus fortunei or Pachysandra.

Use phormium in place of Dracena or spiky Vinca in containers and in place of grasses in garden beds. Contrast Phormiums dramatic leaves with low growing, delicate foliage, such as perennial geraniums and coreopsis.

Vinca major, maidenhair fern, violets and even certain grasses make good living mulches. Wandering Jew is often used and is satisfactory, but because of its vigor it is necessary to cut it back a few times each year.

White, cream, yellow, or orange vincalike flowers about 2 inches across; arrowhead-shaped leaves. Suzie hybrids are short and bushy enough for hanging baskets; white, orange, or yellow flowers have dark throats. Full sun.

Periwinkle (Vinca) is often used in landscaping. The oleander (Nerium oleander) is grown as an ornamental (and toxic) shrub in warmer parts of our country. Oleander contains cardiac glycosides.
