There are over 500 species of the genus Viola, commonly called violets. They are found scattered across the world, but most are in the temperate areas of the northern hemisphere.

Sweet-faced violas are a staple of the fall and winter garden. Even when the weather is gray, they provide cheerful â€- and reliable â€- color.

Viola acuminata
15 (20)cm, a rarely cultivated perennial species with showy white, sky blue or bicolored flowers above broadly arrow shaped light green leaves.

Viola hastata is a fascinating plant. Even if it never flowered it would be well worth growing for its silvery marbled foliage. The specific epithet hastata , refers to the almost arrow shape of the leaves.

'Baby Lucia' bears somewhat smaller flowers with a blue backround and yellow markings from spring through summer. The Allegro Series cultivars produce large flowers in a variety of colors and markings.

Viola tricolor is pretty in containers, as edging, or as a companion for bulbs. It self-seeds readily.

Violets, Viola pedata, may be directly sown into the garden at anytime from spring through fall. If they are started indoors they need darkness for germination (cover the flat with black poly).

Viola 'Prairie Violet'

Viola cornuta / Tufted or Horned Violets - Spreading perennials with a rosette of leaves topped by 1 ½ inch flowers in a variety of colors with rays or lines in a deeper or contrasting shade. V. cornuta may even has a slight scent.

Pansies are the cultivated form of the native viola. There are many strains of pansies and violas available.

Violas are grown from seeds. They like full to partial sun. Viola can be directly seeded into your flower garden or seeded indoors for transplanting later.

Viola cornuta is called the Tufted Violet, Horned Violet, or Bedding Pansy. We have the cultivar "Rebecca," which has creamy pale blossoms edged in deep shades of purple, over oval dark leaves that stand four to eight inches tall.

Seeds sown lightly covered spring, as soon as soil can be worked, or in fall; some species require stratification or fall-sowing. Dark required for germination, which is often irregular.

Viola cunninghamii is a small tufted herbaceous plant, reaching 4-8 in (10-20 cm) high. The leaves are triangular to oval. The flowers are white, greenish or yellowish at the throat, with a number of purple lines on the petals.

Violas plant themselves all over the garden. Those that do not have to share light with other plants, grow compact and low. Those planting themselves in among taller neighbors grow higher and higher.
