Vitex rotundifolia (beach vitex) is a species of Vitex that is native to seashores throughout the Pacific. Its range includes continents and islands stretching from India east to Hawaii and from Korea south to Australia.

 


Vitex agnus-castus 'Montrose Purple' is a large deciduous shrub or small tree when limbed up with aromatic, palmately compound leaves. From early summer to frost the Texas Lilac is covered with 8-12" long fragrant flower spikes.

The genus name Vitex allegedly derived from Latin vitilis made by plaiting, because the flexible branches of the tree were used in the construction of plaited fences (note that willow has similar seman­tics).

MEDICINAL: Vitex is a normalizing herb for the reproductive system. It is most commonly used in treating infertility, PMS, menopausal problems, and hormonal imbalances.

Chaste Tree (Vitex) - V. Agnuscastus is a graceful shrub, with divided leaves, and in late summer clusters of small pale lilac flowers. It grows 6 to 10 feet high against a wall, but even thus protected is liable to be killed during a severe winter.

Chaste-Tree (Vitex). Chaste-tree is similar in appearance to bluebeard except that the blossoms are in large panicles of blue-purple. It also needs full sun and well-drained soil.

The genus name "Negundo" was apparently applied because of similarities between the leaf shape of Negundo aceroides and Vitex negundo. "Aceroides" is from the Latin and Greek for "similar to acers", i.e., similar to Maples.

(2009); Vitex is paraphyletic. For the phylogeny of the Australian-centered Chloantheae (Prostantheroideae), see Conn et al. (2009). In Ajugoideae, Clerodendrum is being divided (Steane et al. 1999, 2004).

Original box elder is not highly regarded in the Eastern states, but was used by Native Americans up and down the Missouri River for making sugar. The word negundo is from Sanskrit nirgund—i, a name current in India for species of Vitex.
