The leaves of the Water Hemlock are sometimes found admixed with those of Conium.

Smooth, erect, highly branched plant bearing dome- shaped, loose clusters of small white flowers. The sturdy stem is magenta-streaked.

Bulb-bearing water hemlock is deadly poisonous. The name comes from small bulblets that are clustered on the leaves.

Humans have been killed after only one or two bites of what they thought were "parsnips" (water hemlock root resembles a parsnip).

The family has many edible species (carrot, parsnip, celery, dill) and many that are poisonous [poison hemlock, spotted water hemlock (see the Archive), water parsnip].

They resemble the poison and water hemlocks but are usually distinguishable by their elongated, rather than rounded, seedlike fruits.

"Cicutarium" is for the resemblance of the leaves of Filaree to those of the poisonous Water Hemlock, Cicuta douglasii. (Conium maculatum now bears the common name of "Poison Hemlock". Both Cicuta and Conium plants are extremely poisonous.) ...

Warning: Do not confuse this plant with Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum) or Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata) both of which are highly poisonous. Neither of these poisonous plants has the red flower in the center.
