The White Oak tree can grow from 80 to 100 feet tall ,3 to 4 feet in diameter around the trunk and can spread from 50 to 80 feet. The Oak tree grows upright and its bark is whitish gray .
White oaks live for centuries. The Wye Mill Plantation in Maryland, site of the recently signed peace accords, has a beautiful 350-year-old specimen. Our own state has the 300-year-old Council Oaks.

Oak - Acorns of the white oak group generally have little or no dormancy and will germinate almost immediately after falling. These species should usually be planted in the fall.
The white oaks (e.g., the white, post, bur, cork, and holly oaks) are characterized by smooth-lobed leaves and acorns that mature in one year. Q. alba, the white oak, is the most important timber tree of the oak genus.
The tight, solid bark is typically more seriously damaged than the rough, corky bark of species such as white oak [55]. Mortality is higher for smaller northern red than for larger trees.

If your favorite Oak tree dies and you go to a nursery to buy a replacement, it won't get you far to say, "I want an Oak". You need at least to know "White Oak" or better yet, "Quercus alba". That way you will get exactly what you want.
