The genus Baptisia is comprised of more than 20 species of perennials from dry woodland and grassland in the eastern and southern United States. Leaves are fully divided and palmate.

Baptisias, also known as false or wild indigos (Baptisia spp.), are a group of large, long-lived perennials. They provide an extended season of interest from flowers and foliage.

Usage
White wild indigo makes a good landscape plant, usually planted as a single specimen and used like a bush. Blue flowered species of Baptisia were used by native Americans and early settlers to make a blue dye.

False indigo, or wild indigo is a useful perennial plant for flowering gardens with attractive fall seed pods and late spring flowers.

alba (formerly B. pendula), or thick pod wild indigo, is the southeastern form of B. alba. It is easily recognizable from B. alba var. macrophylla (B. leucantha) due to it's large black pendant seed pods and shorter stature to 3-4' tall.

Baptisia sphaerocarpa 'Screaming Yellow' (Yellow wild indigo) The name says it all. Spires of acid yellow flowers rise above yellow-green foliage on a smaller plant than other species, only about 2 feet tall.

Leave a large part of the stem in place on any perennials that are slow to start growing in the spring, like plumbago or blue wild indigo. The stems will mark their location next spring, so you don't dig them up by accident.
