Willow oaks transplant readily and will grow in a wide array of soils. However, they grow faster and to a larger size in bottomland sites or areas with reasonably fertile conditions. Once established they tolerate drought well.

Pussy willows, Salix discolor, grow well in almost any soil but it is a good idea to supplement it with peat moss, leaf mold or compost. They require full sun to thrive, but will survive in the shade as well.

Peking Willow is a popular ornamental tree in northern China, and is also grown for wood production and shelterbelts there, being particularly important around the oases of the Gobi Desert to protect agricultural land from desert winds.

Carolina willow is located in 23 states including Florida (Kartesz, 1999). It occurs almost always (estimated probability 99%) under natural conditions in wetlands.

Australian Willow is a small tree or bush found in inland parts of eastern Australia. It features thin drooping leaves, up to 18 cm long. Australian Willow may grow up to 10 metres tall, and has drooping branches.

The Desert Willow blooms a beautiful trumpet shaped flower in spring and through the fall that resembles that of the catalpa.

The leaves are usually, though not always, marked with purple. The stem may also be purplish.

Although many willows are plants of wet places, several grow on coastal dunes.

In addition to willow blue-star's small but charming clusters of blue flowers in late spring, it has upright, willow-like leaves that turn clear yellow in fall.

This Primrose Willow is native to South America.
Similar Species: There are several other members of the Ludwigia genus which have four showy petals, eight stamens and grow in wet places, but this species is by far the largest.

'Tortuosa' is an upright, fast-growing tree with thin, greenish-brown, marvelously twisting shoots that provide a fantastic display in winter.

The resemblance of the foliage to that of willows gives rise to the popular name 'willow amsonia'. In autumn there is lovely yellow leaf colour before it falls. It needs placing with care but looks good amongst grasses.

Willow gentian (G. asclepiadea, zone 5)
Coming from a family of shorties, the willow gentian (its name derived from its long, narrow leaves resembling those of a willow) is something of an oddball, growing from 60 to 100 centimetres tall.

MEDICINAL: Willow works like aspirin. In fact, aspirin was derived from willow bark. It is also used to cleanse and heal eyes that are infected or inflamed.

Willow Myrtle: Agonis spp.
The Orange-bark Myrtle, also called Tree Myrtle and Chilean Myrtle, is from temperate Chile and western Argentina. It is a versatile, handsome plant with edible berries, and is still too little known in Seattle.

Willow blue star (A. t. salicifolia, sometimes listed as A. salicifolia) is much like eastern blue star except its leaves are narrower, longer, and more tapered, giving a willowlike appearance. It blooms in late spring or early summer.
