Winged Nut (Pterocarya) - Walnut-like trees of fine stately form of leaf and habit, P. caucasica being hardy in England, at least in the southern and warmer parts.

Fruits winged nutlets, 0.06" long, 0.03" wide.
Seed production begins at about age 15, with optimum production at 40 to 70 years. Trees produce good seed crops about every other year.

Fruit: Cone like, cylindrical, 1 inch long, deciduous at maturity releasing tiny, 2-winged nutlets; maturing in late summer and dispersed in early autumn.

Fruit is a three-winged nut (edible), enclosed by a prickly covering (involucre), 2 cm long. Fruit smaller and leaves have more veins (9-14 pairs vs. 5-9 pairs) than F. sylvatica.
Best in full sun, but will withstand part shade.

"Pterocarya" is Greek for "winged nut" and you can see both the nut and the wings developing in the picture below.

FRUIT: A very small, winged nut. As in the other birches, nuts together with small scales, form a cone-like structure, (the strobile), about 1½" long.

Fruit is a winged nutlet, fall maturing. Prefers moist to wet soil , but adaptable to dry, it will seed itself if planted along stream banks. Nitrogen fixing species, does not require fertilization usually, not tolerant of heat.

The female cones are oval-shaped, 2 centimetres long. The seed is a narrow winged nutlet.

The paper birch has both male and female flowers called catkins. These turn into little winged nutkins, which ripen in early August to mid September.
