Wishbone flower has been used in gardens of the Deep South as a substitute for pansies, which do poorly in the very mild winters of zones 9 and 10.

Wishbone flower is best used in masses in borders and flower beds. For the best effect, plant them close together, about 6 in (15 cm) apart. This is the hot weather substitute for pansies Viola x Wittrockiana).

WIshbone Flower, so named because its pair of yellow stamens have a wishbone shape, performs best in partial shade in moist, organic soils.
