Wisteria floribunda, the Japanese wisteria, is a woody liana of the Wisteria family. It was brought from Japan to the United States in 1860 by George Rogers Hall.

 


Wisteria 'Trees'. Wisterias can also be grown as stand alone small tree - though they will need support for this. The trunks are handsome if grown like this.

Well known as an attractive blue-flowering vine climbing over arbors or on walls, the wisteria nevertheless develops a substantial trunk and can be grown as a freestanding tree.

Wisteria sinensis 'Cooke's Purple' is a deciduous woody flowering vine that climbs through a twining method. Chinese Wisteria will flower in the spring before the foliage emerges.

General information: The wisteria is a vigorous low-growing vine, a legume, that is very popular as an ornamental.

Wisteria was introduced to the United States from Japan and China in the 1800’s for use as ornamental plants. Individual wisteria plants can survive for more than 50 years.

Wisteria is a genus of about ten species of woody climbing vines native to the eastern United States and the East Asian states of China, Korea, and Japan. Aquarists refer to the species Hygrophila difformis, in the genus Hygrophila, as Water Wisteria.

BACKGROUND: Chinese wisteria was brought to the U.S. from China in 1816 and Japanese wisteria was introduced from Japan around 1830. Both were brought in as ornamentals. They have been grown extensively in the southern U.S.

The Tree Wisteria is certainly one of the most spectacular of our indigenous trees when in flower, it has the splendour of the jacaranda, which unfortunately is proving to be an invader species in parts of South Africa.

Reminiscent of Wisteria, these trees' pendulous, bright yellow flower clusters grow up to 20 inches long. Olive-green bark and bright green compound leaves add to their ornamental beauty. Their brown leathery pods last until winter.

Plants that are well adapted to the cascade and semi-cascade styles are prostrate junipers, and flowering plants such as chrysanthemums, wisteria, willows, and star jasmine.

The flowers are similar to those of a wisteria. The large leaves turn rich yellow in autumn and there are also long, plump, yellowish green seedpods. The tree does not start to flower for some years.
