Cirsium horridulum
Yellow thistle is endangered in Connecticut. Typically, the flowers are dull yellow, though flower color varies. The upright, spiny leaves that surround the flowerhead make a good identifier.

 


Spectacular golden-yellow thistle like flowers on stiff stems in mid- and late summer and lance-shaped mid-green leaves. This bold plant is ideal for providing vertical interest in a sunny well-drained herbaceous border.

This clumping, robust perennial has unusual ramrod-stiff flower stems that bloom from early summer through late summer. Its fat, rusty buds open into large, deep yellow thistle flowers the size of a small fist. Easy to cut and dry for arrangements.
