Yew is the common name for the 8 species of the genus Taxus in the yew family, Taxaceae. These shrubs or small trees have thin, reddish-brown to purple, scaly bark.

Yew is poisonous, so don't eat the slimy red berries or the leaves. Its wood is hard, heavy, dark, fine, lovely and prized for making bows. It can also be burned as incense.

This yew has dark green leaves, spreading 4 to 5 feet in height. Wonderful color in winter. Taxus x media, depending on the cultivar, may range from 2 feet tall to 20 feet tall. In general, form is broadly pyramidal with a central leader.

Plum yew grows in full sun or moderate shade. It tolerates drought but grows a bit faster if given a good soil and water during dry spells. Like all conifers, avoid poorly drained site.
