It is not clear which taxa have a hypanthium; at least some species of Ulmus and Pilea do, but other species of Ulmus, Zelkova and Trema show no obvious signs of one (see also Bechtel 1921).
Other species of elms (Ulmus) and the close relative Zelkova, especially younger plants, look similar to Siberian elm. Some may even confuse it with choke-cherry (Prunus serotina) and hackberry (Celtis sp.).

Please don't confuse these trees with Zelkova bonsai , which are more winter-hardy, and are a different species. Chinese Elm bonsai trees have small, serrated leaves. They can develop twiggy style branching, which is another plus for bonsai.

Only the hackberry is found naturally in the West. Other cultivated genera from the family include Aphananthe, Hemiptelea, Pteroceltis, and Zelkova. The elm population has suffered greatly from Dutch elm disease.
Of course, mame should be miniature versions of the original tree, not some grotesquely deformed plant. You could shape a zelkova like a broom, cryptomerias as pillars; and pines make good mame with all the characteristics of the original species.
