Leaves opposite, cordate-ovate to elliptic, rough. Flowers are in heads, up to 6" across, scaly receptacle. Ray flowers are showly, disk flowers are usually absent. Height up to 3 feet, round or erect growth habit.

Their tetraploid snapdragon appeared in 1946 and was soon followed by the enormous cactus-flowered zinnias and tetraploid marigolds. This bigger-is-better philosophy has been carried to extreme in some plants.

From A to Z, annuals such as alyssum and zinnias are seeded to brighten the greenhouse. Earth-filled benches may be planted as a miniature garden, or used for cut-flower growing.

Upright (larger): ageratum, Brachyscome iberidifolia (swan river daisy), diascia, heliotrope, lantana, margerite, osteospermum, pelargonium, salvia, verbena, zinnia.

Most herbaceous plants flower opportunistically with enough rain, and sometimes more than once. The desert zinnia will flower in both rainy seasons. Ocotillo will grow and shed its leaves three weeks later after every rain.
