Zinnia elegans
Like marigolds, various species of zinnias are native to areas from the southwest U.S. to South America, and may be annual or perennial. Zinnia elegans, the most familiar garden variety, are native to Mexico.
Zinnia elegans is the familiar species, originally from Mexico and thus a warm-hot climate plant. Its leaves are lance-shaped and sandpapery in texture, and height ranges from 15 cm to 1 meter.
Zinnia elegans and Zinnia melampodium grown in the same manner; the latter is the drought-tolerant African zinnia. Note that hybrids are best started indoors, as opposed to seeding directly, outdoors

Leaves opposite, cordate-ovate to elliptic, rough. Flowers are in heads, up to 6" across, scaly receptacle. Ray flowers are showly, disk flowers are usually absent. Height up to 3 feet, round or erect growth habit.
