Zucchini (also called courgette or marrow) is a summer squash, similar to crookneck and straightneck, and scallop squashes.

Zucchini are part of the gourd family. They are native to Central America and Mexico. Zucchini are grown throughout the United States during the warm, frost free season.

Yellow Zucchini
Probably the most well-known variety of summer squash. It has dark green or yellow skin covering an off-white flesh. The skin often contains some lighter colored specs or stripes. It is much like a cucumber in size and shape.

Pumpkins, squash, zucchini and gourds belong to the Cucurbita genus of this family, along with the coyote gourd (Cucurbita foetidissima) pictured here. Muskmelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and cucumbers belong to Cucumis.

Summer squash includes yellow (straight and crookneck), zucchini and scallop. Some varieties have a bush-type of growth instead of the vining habit, which is useful if your garden is small.

This Ibervillea is dioecious, there are male and female plants, and both are needed to get viable seeds. The flowers coming throughout most of the summer, are yellow. The female flowers look like they have growing from a miniature zucchini.
