Alpha Fetoprotein

Pregnancy & Parenting Alopecia areataAlphafetoprotein

Alpha fetoprotein: A substance produced by the fetus. High levels in a mother's blood can indicate a neural tube defect or multiple pregnancy.
Amino acid: A building block of protein which is used by the body to build muscle and other tissue.

AFP -- Alpha FetoProtein. A chemical found in the amniotic fluid and the mother's blood which is produced by the pregnancy.

AFP - Alpha fetoprotein A test done on mother's blood or amniotic fluid to determine the amount of a certain protein made by the fetus.

Lack of association between unexplained elevated maternal serum alpha fetoprotein and/or human chorionic gonadotropin and the occurrence of placental thrombotic lesions.

Alpha fetoprotein: a protein produced by the baby that can be measured prenatally, by taking a tube of your blood, to identify possible neural tube disorders and other potential problems, such as Down's Syndrome or anencephaly.

Genetic testing can be as simple, and harmless to the baby, as the Maternal Serum Alpha fetoprotein test (also known as the triple screen). This is a screening test for neural tube defects and Down syndrome.

Abnormal maternal screening tests, such as maternal serum alpha fetoprotein level (MSAFP)
Risk of a sex-linked genetic disease
Amniocentesis may be used in the third trimester of pregnancy to assess for conditions such as: ...

Later, prenatal diagnostic tests such as alpha fetoprotein, amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling may be performed as screening measures for congenital defects.

- Free(beta)hCG or total hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin)
- AFP (alpha fetoprotein)
- uE3 (unconjugated estriol)
Some also test for:
- Inhibin A.
