Amenorrhea is characterized by a complete lack of menstrual cycles. This may appear as primary amenorrhea, which is the lack of menstruation before age 16.

Diagnosis begins with a gynecologist evaluating a female's medical history and a complete physical examination including a pelvic examination.

Amenorrhea, or absence of your monthly period. When you get pregnant, rising hormone levels prevent you from shedding the uterine lining at the time you'd expect to have your period. You can also miss your period if you're not pregnant.
