An assessment of the physical condition of an infant after birth created by Dr. Virginia Apgar. The score is based on a combination of the heartbeat, respiration, skin color, irritability, and muscle tone.

The Apgar score is a test used to measure the vital signs of a baby at birth.
What Is the APGAR Score?
When your baby is born he will be given an APGAR score at both one minute and five minutes after birth. Many new parents don't know what the APGAR is or what exactly it is for.
APGAR SCORE. A simple way of assessing a the baby's health, immediately after birth, by scoring points for heart rate, breathing, skin colour, tone, and the baby's reactions.

The APGAR score is a measurement of a newborn's response to the birth experience and its new life outside the womb.
The scoring is from 1-10, with 10 being very high.
Apgar Score-This index is used to evaluate the condition of a newborn infant. A rating of 0, 1, or 2 is given for each of five characteristics: color, heart rate, response to stimulation, muscle tone, and respiration. A perfect score is 10.

Apgar scores range from zero to 10. A baby who scores seven or more is considered very healthy. But a lower score doesn't always mean there is something wrong. Perfectly healthy babies often have low Apgar scores in the first minute of life.

Your baby will be given Apgar scores according to her condition at 1 and 5 minutes of birth. A total of 10 points can be scored. A score of 10 is unusual and most babies receive scores of 7, 8 or 9.
