Autoimmune diseases are conditions in which the body makes antibodies against one's own normal body chemicals. In these diseases, antibodies cannot tell antigens in the inside of the cell from antigens outside of the cell.

It is an autoimmune disease which means that the immune system is fighting the body itself instead of attacking viruses and bacterias. Anti-phospholipid antibodies appear to alter the 'phospholipid' skin that lines the blood vessels of organs.

In summary, autoimmune diseases can make the thyroid hyperfunction or hypofunction. Thyroid hormone supplementation treats "hypo," and "hyper" is treated with drugs like PTU that interfere with using iodine to make thyroid hormones.
