Pregnancy & Parenting BlastocystBlighted ovum

Blastomere: One of the cells egg divides into after it has been fertilized.
Bloody show: Small amount of vaginal bleeding late in pregnancy; often precedes labour.

Blastomere -- A cell produced during cleavage of a fertilized egg.
Blighted Ovum -- A pregnancy that stops developing very early on. The amniotic sac may only contain fluid and no fetal tissue when the miscarriage occurs.

Blastomere - One of the cells into which the fertilized egg divides. Blastomere formation begins immediately after the sperm fertilizes the egg and continues through the first week of embryonic development.

BLASTOMERE- A single cell in an embryo, which can divide at its own rate.
BLIGHTED OVUM (Egg)- A general term used to mean a fertilized egg that fails to survive after implantation in the uterus.

Usually 48 hours after fertilization, the embryo is between two to four cells (blastomeres). At 72 hours, they are usually between six to eight cells.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) A technique that involves examination of the chromosomes contained in the polar body, taken from an egg, or a blastomere from a developing embryo.

Morula: The stage of cell division prior to blastocyst. It is a solid mass of blastomeres formed by cleavage of a fertilized egg.
Motility: The measurement of motion and forward progression of sperm in a semen analysis.

The zygote divides to produce two smaller cells, called blastomeres, roughly every 20 hours. These cells get progressively smaller until about 4 divisions have taken place resulting in 16 individual cells.
