The recommendation against bumper pads is part of the focus on providing infants with safe sleeping environments. Moon and coauthors said no evidence exists to support the view that bumper pads reduce SIDS risk.

Although bumper pads are widely used, their safety has been questioned. One study from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found a number of accidental deaths appeared to be related to the use of bumper pads in cribs and bassinets.

Although there is little statistical evidence to support an all-out ban on crib bumper pads, experts theorize that they, like all soft bedding, can create pockets in which babies can rebreathe carbon dioxide.

Bumper pads should have six ties and fit snugly against the entire perimeter of the crib.
A bassinet should have a wide base and a stable design. Do not use a basket not intended to be a bassinet.

Don't use extra padding, including bumper pads. They are a cause of suffocation, too.
Make sure all screws, bolts and hardware are tightly secured in place.
Make sure there aren't any rough edges or surfaces.

Place infants to sleep in a baby bed with a firm mattress. There should be nothing in the bed but the baby - no covers, no pillows, no bumper pads, no positioning devices and no toys.
