What is cervical incompetence?
Cervical incompetence occurs when an abnormally weak cervix painlessly dilates, leading to rupture of the membranes and delivery of a fetus that's usually too small to survive.

Cervical incompetence
Inability of the cervix to remain closed during pregnancy. The properly functioning cervix will be tightly closed until labor to keep the fetus safely inside the uterus.

Sometimes, light bleeding from the cervix can be a sign of cervical incompetence. This occurs when the cervix opens spontaneously and leads to preterm delivery.

There are many reasons for this, including abruptio placenta (separation of the placenta from the wall of the uterus), cervical incompetence, ectopic pregnancy (implantation of the fertilized egg outside the uterine cavity, ...

For a few women, light bleeding is a sign of cervical insufficiency (CI), also known as cervical incompetence, in which the cervix opens without warning. This can result in preterm labor and delivery.

It is believed that cervical incompetence is the cause of 20 - 25 % of all second trimester losses. This incompetence generally shows up in the early part of the second trimester, but possibly as late as the early third trimester.

An "insufficient" cervix is a weakened cervix that predisposes a woman to mid-term miscarriage or early (premature) delivery. This has also been called cervical incompetence.

As the March of Dimes notes, doctors may recommend that women who have high-risk pregnancies, unexplained vaginal bleeding or discharge, cervical incompetence or placenta previa, or who are leaking amniotic fluid, avoid sexual intercourse.
